[Dan Williams: Talking Water in Florida]

Talking water in Florida "Water is like apple pie: everyone wants it, wants the best quality, and considers it their own," says ARC and URP alumnus Dan Williams who travelled to Gainesville in February to participate in the National Academy of Environmental Design's Water and Sustainability Symposium hosted by DCP. >> Full Story

URP Planning Day: April 15
Is going green worth the green? Find out at the Department of Urban and Regional Planning's Planning Day 2009 symposium on April 15 at UF.

The push for sustainability impacts everyone from designers, contractors and planners to residents and regulatory officials. Each of these stakeholders brings a different view to the debate on sustainability's three critical issues: how do we define and measure sustainable development, how do we regulate it and how much are we willing to pay?

This symposium will gather a diverse panel of experts to discuss the costs and benefits of sustainable development as well as alternative strategies to address the concerns that have inspired Florida's "green" movement. More information will be coming soon on the DCP Web site.

DCP Top 3 Ways the Shimberg Center's research will help Florida's communities

Macarthur
Recently, the Shimberg Center for Housing Studies shared in a $1 million grant from the MacArthur Foundation. With its partners, the Florida Housing Finance Corporation and the Florida Housing Coalition, the center will help the state to preserve affordable rental housing by:

  1. Pinpointing the affordable rental housing properties most at risk of loss to rising rents, demolition or expiration of government subsidies.
  2. Providing housing market data to local governments and non-profits involved in preserving rental housing for Florida's low-wage workers and seniors.
  3. Finding the best spots for affordable housing preservation that will connect tenants to transportation and jobs in their communities.

DCP in Your Town: Orlando

On Feb. 26, Dean Christopher Silver was in your town, Orlando. He was the featured speaker at the Gray Robinson P.A. Community Leader Forum, which had a room capacity of nearly 100 people and a plentiful Gator alumni contingent.

Silver discussed the projects and opportunities Orlando affords to DCP students.

"DCP has long recognized Orlando as a living laboratory to study the concepts and strategies needed to advance the American city toward the sustainable urban center of the future," Silver said.

"We have two studios working on Orlando projects this semester and we are expanding our Citi-Lab: Orlando program to include an ongoing physical presence in downtown Orlando." >>Full Story

CLASSIC CRACKER Redux: Call for Help!

Classic Cracker Haase HouseProfessor Emeritus Ron Haase is working on a "sequel" to his book, CLASSIC CRACKER, which explored Florida's wood-frame vernacular architecture. This first book was illustrated with a number of student projects that came out of Prof. Haase's 4th year and graduate studios.

He hopes to do the same in this second book and is soliciting submittals from his former students. The new book Haase is developing will cover what he calls "The Four Faces of Florida," focusing not only on the Cracker tradition but also the Spanish Colonial that preceded it, the Sarasota School and the Art Deco of Miami Beach.

If you have a design for a "contemporary" residential project that was "inspired" by one of these four vernacular traditions, send some images to Prof. Haase. He'd love to hear from you.
