This past summer, students from the UF School of Architecture participated in a study abroad program in China. Under the guidance of the East Asia Summer Program Co-Directors Hui Zou and Albertus Wang, students explored the local cultures, had a unique travel experience and developed active relationships with East Asia's academic programs through a joint studio of urban design.
Tracy Wyman, BLA 2013, working with students from Commonwealth Secondary School in Singapore as they launch their newly created wetland into an urban pond. Have you ever wondered what it would be like to be a teaching assistant in Costa Rica, build a floating wetland in Singapore or develop a forest park entrance? For several landscape architecture students, this past summer involved all of this and so much more. Offering study abroad programs in Paris and Bali, the Department of Landscape Architecture encourages its students to experience the profession in a unique and foreign culture. The UF Rinker School of Building Construction held its Fall Career Fair on Oct. 16 at the O'Connell Center. Bob Rhodes (center) flanked by Dr. Kristen Larsen, URP Chair, and Dr. Richard Schneider, lecture series organizer, receives a plaque honoring his talk at the 5th Annual Bartley Memorial Lecture. "Florida's Growth Management: Certain Change, Uncertain Reform" was the topic of the fifth annual Ernest R. Bartley Memorial Lecture, presented by the University of Florida and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Bob Rhodes, a planning leader and attorney, was the guest speaker for the evening and discussed recently enacted significant revisions to the state's growth management and planning legislation as well as suggestions for moving forward. Rhodes is the former executive vice president and general counsel of the St. Joe Company and senior vice president and general counsel for the Arvida and Disney Development Companies. The lecture honored Professor Ernest R. Bartley who taught at UF for more than 50 years.
Junior interior design students, with the guidance of interior design assistant professors Nichole Campbell and Marty Hylton, are working with The Village Continuing Care Retirement Community in Gainesville to redesign an outdated Independent Living building for use as Enhanced Independent Living. Enhanced Independent Living is a new level of care for CCRCs that is being developed from Dr. Campbell's research. The new designs developed by the students focus heavily on the building's social center. Students presented their work at the mid-project review on Oct. 15 and presented their final projects on Oct. 26. During the mid-project review, junior interior design studio students, Nikki Clause and Sabryna Lyn, discuss their redesign of The Village's Lake House building with Village residents.

CityLab-Orlando, the UF School of Architecture master's program located in Orlando, accepted its first class this fall. In total, there are 16 students pursuing the Master of Architecture and a Fulbright Scholar from Russia who is pursuing a Master of Science in Architectural Studies. CityLab-Orlando focuses on architecture in the urban environment and engages students with design challenges that emerge from the context of the city.
