ACE Mentor Program

Students with UF's ACE Mentoring Summer Camp put their skills to the test at BCN's Perry Construction Yard. The students participated in a nail and hammer competition and worked together to practice safety when using equipment.

DCP and BCN host ACE Mentoring Summer Camp

For one week this summer, DCP and BCN hosted 21 high school students who are interested in attending college and majoring in either architecture, construction or engineering. Throughout the week, the camp participants got a feel for what it would be like to attend UF. The students participated in several hands-on activities such as designing and building a model, competing in a nail and hammer competition, practicing safety while using equipment in the Perry Construction Yard and visiting a construction site. BCN's Richard Smailes, senior lecturer and director of undergraduate programs, worked with the ACE Mentor Program to organize the camp.

SOA hosts Design Exploration Program

The School of Architecture hosted the Design Exploration Program again this summer. DEP is a 3-week long summer program open to high school students who have completed their freshman year. In its 30th year, the program educates students interested in architecture and design by immersing them in an architectural educational environment. The students gain a greater understanding of both the architectural curriculum and environment at UF through the construction of studio design projects which equips students with hands-on experience, program activities which serve to foster a sense of community and enhance teamwork and field trips which aim to broaden the scope of architectural theories, methods and principles.

Mike Stauffer, BDes 1986 and MArch 1988, was the architect for HGTV's Smart Home 2013. HGTV's Smart Home was part of a contest giveaway for the Home and Garden Network. The house was built and designed with eco-friendly features and energy-efficient designs.

Stauffer was part of the design/build team along with a planner, construction project manager, interior designer, landscape architect, real estate broker and general contractor.

When designing the home, Stauffer focused on the relationship between interior spaces and the connection between interior and exterior spaces. "Your space feels bigger because you are basically bringing the outdoors in," Stauffer said.
