Ron Whalen, BCN 1990 and Vice President of KBR Building Group, was involved with the University of Florida Research and Academic Center project at the Medical City at Lake Nona in Orlando, Fla. Several other UF alumni were involved with the project on the construction and design side. 2014 DCP Research Showcase "Collaborative Community Initiatives" DCP's annual research showcase is an opportunity to hear from DCP faculty about research findings and new ideas that are driving our fields. The showcase includes faculty presentations and panel discussions highlighting the ways planning, design and construction professionals collaborate to optimize success. This month, the newly formed non-profit Center for Architecture Sarasota (CFAS) hosted an inaugural weekend of events. During a private reception held at The Spencer House, designed by Guy Peterson Office of Architecture, CFAS received a donation, which will be used to restore the future home of both CFAS and UF CityLab-Sarasota. UF CityLab-Sarasota was developed through collaboration among the UF School of Architecture, Sarasota County and the CFAS. The CFAS works to provide a sustainable platform for the UF CityLab-Sarasota graduate studies in architecture program. > Read the article in the Herald-Tribune UF Design Symposium Ravi Srinivasan, BCN assistant professor, presents an idea for a collaborative design course, "Design Engineers Team," at the Design Symposium. In September, alumni, faculty and students from DCP, the College of Engineering and the College of Fine Arts attended UF's Design Symposium. Through presentations, panels, discussions and a keynote lecture, topics such as, "What Makes Great Design?" and "Design Thinking" were discussed. Speakers Dr. Leticia Britos Cavagnaro and Dr. Janetta McCoy led attendees in a group exercise and discussion to explore the importance of design thinking to address fundamental challenges in applied professions. Earl Starnes discusses "Memoirs of an old planner" at 5th Annual Ernest R. Bartley Lecture Pictured above: Dean Christopher Silver, Earl Starnes, UF professor emeritus, and Richard Schneider, URP professor. "Memoirs of an old planner" was the topic of the fifth annual Ernest R. Bartley Memorial Lecture, presented by the University of Florida and the Department of Urban and Regional Planning. Earl Starnes, UF professor emeritus and founding chair of the UF Department of Urban and Regional Planning, was the guest speaker for the evening. Starnes was Florida's first Director of the Division of State Planning and was a county commissioner and Vice Mayor for Miami-Dade County. He is also a strong advocate of sustainable environmental policy and worked closely with Bartley and Governors Askew, Chiles and Graham to craft and administer growth management and environmental protection legislation. The annual lecture honors Professor Ernest R. Bartley who taught at UF for more than 50 years. |
