Witters Competition fosters understanding among disciplines Four interdisciplinary teams competed March 21-23 for the 2014 Witters Competition . The 48-hour design charrette was led by Tom Smith, SoA senior lecturer, and Ravi Srinivasan, BCN assistant professor. This year's winning team was Lawrence Zeng, LAE, Alexandra Fasshauer, ARCH, Julie Emminger, IND, and Bethany Mayhew, ARCH. DCP young alumni recognized with UF honor Dara Huang, BDes 2004, and Carlos Perez, BLA 2004, are recipients of UF's Outstanding Young Alumni Award. Established by UF's Alumni Association, the award recognizes alumni ages 35 or younger who have distinguished themselves in their profession and community. Dara Huang is an architect and the creative director at Design Haus Liberty in London, which she opened in November 2012. Previous to opening her own practice, Huang contributed to the new Tribeca skyscraper, 56 Leonard Street in New York City; The New Tate Modern Museum in London; and was personally invited to compete for the design of the Samsung Pavilion for the London Olympics 2012. Today, Huang's designs reflect a cross between contemporary art, fashion, and industrial and modern architecture. Carlos Perez is a landscape architect, planner, urban designer/associate at AECOM in Atlanta. He co-leads AECOM's Parks + Open Space System Planning and Design Practice. In addition to leading and assisting with business development for local, regional and strategic national pursuits, he serves as the project manager, planner, landscape architect and urban designer for a variety of projects. Perez has worked with over 30 public agencies nationwide developing city and county-wide visions focused on implementation. Additionally, Perez is very involved in professional organizations, as a Board Member of the Atlanta parks advocacy non-profit organization Park Pride and a founding Board Member of the Atlanta Chapter of Young Professionals in Transportation. Department of Interior Design honored at IDEC Conference Faculty and students from the Department of Interior Design were honored at this year's Interior Design Educator's Council (IDEC) Conference. The annual conference was held March 6 - 8 in New Orleans, La. Meg Portillo, IND chair and professor, and Candy Carmel-Gilfilen, IND undergraduate coordinator, won the Best Paper Award for "Innovation by Empathetic Design: Narratives of Learning." Nichole Campbell, IND assistant professor, Pamela Driza, DCP doctoral student, Nam-Kyu Park, IND assistant professor, and Marty Hylton, director of HP and IND assistant professor, all presented papers at the conference. Also, Tiffany Lang, DCP doctoral student, received the IDEC Foundation Travel Scholarship. MSD Fieldtrip to the Netherlands Students in the Master of Science in Architectural Studies: Sustainable Design program visited Groningen, Netherlands in February where Dr. Paul van Steen hosted the group. The purpose of the trip was to explore sustainable transportation solutions, in particular the accommodations made for the bicycle as an alternative mode of transportation. Besides lectures and walking tours, the students spent a half-day on bikes stopping at regular intervals to discuss roundabouts, intersections, traffic signalization, intermodal transfers (bike to train, bike to bus, bike to pedestrian) and the biking culture. UFLA Advisory Board Meeting On April 4, the UF Landscape Architecture Advisory Council met on campus.
