UF Law ranked in nation's Top 10

The first national ranking of law schools to consider "output," i.e. the caliber of a school's graduates, has placed the University of Florida Levin College of Law first in Florida, eighth overall and fourth among public schools. The inaugural ranking by Super Lawyers magazine was based on the number of each school's graduates in the magazine's annual state and regional listing of exceptional lawyers in more than 70 areas of practice. The list was created through a rigorous multiphase selection process composed of a wide range of objective indicators of peer recognition and professional achievement. READ MORE»
Gift of $1 million will complete Levin Law Advocacy Center

A $1 million gift will complete the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law's Trial Advocacy Center and bring the total of Levin family gifts to the law school to nearly $30 million, including state matching funds. The gift from Teri Levin, Fredric G. Levin's sister-in-law, honors her late husband, Allen Richard Levin. The announcement was made on the evening of Dec. 3 during a Pensacola, Fla. reception for UF Law alumni. The gift will fund construction of classrooms, offices and meeting spaces on the second floor of the new Martin H. Levin Advocacy Center.

Former Florida Supreme Court chief justice to serve as jurist-in-residence

University of Florida Levin College of Law students will have the unique opportunity to tap into 43 years of experience and legal perspective of former Chief Justice of the Florida Supreme Court Charles T. Wells on Jan. 20-21 as he serves as the Peter T. Fay Jurist-in-Residence. The Jurist-in-Residence Program, launched in 2009, brings experienced judges to campus to share their legal insights and experiences with students through participation in college activities and classroom discussions. In addition to attending classes and meeting with students, Wells, a 1964 graduate of UF Law whose legal experience spans 28 years in private practice and 15 years on the state's highest court, including two years as chief justice, will give a presentation on Jan. 20.

UF Sports Law Symposium to examine legal playbook as collective bargaining agreements expire

On Jan. 29, sports agents, litigators, salary cap analysts and sports law students will huddle up at the University of Florida Levin College of Law to get ready for a whole new ball game. In the next two years, time will expire on the collective bargaining agreements affecting the negotiation of salaries and playing conditions for professional athletes. The 2010 UF Sports Law Symposium, "Discussion: Bargaining Collectively," presented by UF's Entertainment & Sports Law Society, will bring together sports law experts and representatives from the National Football League, National Basketball Association and Major League Baseball to discuss why CBA's exist, how they help players and owners, and to identify contract terms that will likely be argued before the agreement expires. The event is free and open to the public, and is set to kick off at 11 a.m. at UF Law's Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (room 180). The event will offer CLE credits.

UF Law will host Human Trafficking Symposium on Jan. 28

To commemorate the Emancipation Proclamation, which took effect in January 1863, President Barack Obama recently signed a proclamation declaring January as National Slavery and Human Trafficking Prevention Month. It is estimated that one million people, mostly women and children, are trafficked around the world each year, lured into involuntary servitude and sexual slavery. According to the Somaly Mam Foundation, a non-profit public charity committed to ending modern slavery around the world, global slave trade generates $12 billion annually.
In an effort to bring these issues to light, the UF Levin College of Law Immigration Law Association will hold a Human Trafficking Symposium on Jan. 28 from 4 p.m. – 7 p.m. in UF Law's Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (room 180). Co-sponsors of the event include Lexis/Nexis, CaribLaw, Asian/Pacific American Law Association, and the Hispanic and Latino/a Law Student Association. The event is free and open to UF students.

Virtual law mini conference offered students a connection to real world legal experts

University of Florida Levin College of Law professor Michelle Jacobs is taking her class to the edge. The cutting edge, that is. Jacobs is one of a handful of U.S. law professors experimenting with a relatively new computer technology called Second Life. "Second Life is a virtual world that allows users to create an avatar, an animated character or persona, to enter in and network with other avatars in 3-D worlds that include everything from courtrooms to classrooms," Jacobs said.

2010 Costa Rica program to support regional initiatives in environmental law in Central American and the Amazon

As part of two regional initiatives to develop environmental law education in Latin America, the 2010 University of Florida-University of Costa Rica Joint Program in Environmental Law will be enriched by the participation of attorneys and law students from Central America and Brazil. The Central American participants will be part of a cohort that is being selected to participate in the development of a regional environmental law diploma for Central America, part of a broader capacity building initiative under the environment chapter of the Central American Free Trade Agreement.
