UF Law again ranked as Florida's only top tier law school

U.S. News & World Report rankings of the nation's top graduate schools released today once again place the University of Florida Levin College of Law as Florida's only top tier law school.* UF Law is 47th overall, and 24th among all public law schools. Its Graduate Tax Program is 3rd overall and continues to rank 1st among publics. Its Environmental Law Program is tied for 7th among public universities and 16th overall. Peer and lawyer/judge assessment scores place UF Law in the top 40 on both counts: 38th overall and 17th among publics in peer assessment, and 39th overall and 18th among publics in lawyer/judge assessment.

Zack, Grimes and MacKay to be honored at commencement

Justice Thomas delivers Criser Lecture with grace and good humor

As blistering winter weather threatened to snow in the nation's capital on Feb. 4, it was sunny but cool in Florida. Despite the sunshine, 700 law students, faculty and others seated the University of Florida Levin College of Law Marcia Whitney Schott courtyard or standing on the second-floor balcony shivered from time to time as they waited for United States Supreme Court Justice Clarence Thomas (pictured above) to make his appearance as the college's special guest during the second annual Marshall M. Criser Distinguished Lecture.

UF Law grads honored with 2010 Young Alumnus Awards

The University of Florida Alumni Association, Inc. has established the Outstanding Young Alumni Award to recognize alumni who are 35 years of age or younger and have distinguished themselves in their profession and community. The Levin College of Law is proud to announce two UF Law graduates, J. Grier Pressly III (pictured right) and Gregory S. Weiss (pictured far right), recognized this year as Outstanding Young Alumni.

Heritage of Leadership Class of 2010 inductees

To permanently honor outstanding and notable alumni of the University of Florida Levin College of Law and their contributions to the state and University, the Law Center Association Board of Trustees established the Heritage of Leadership Recognition Society. The Selection Committee determined the initial classes of inductees, barring exceptional circumstances, would be honored posthumously. The Class of 2010 inductees are James J. Freeland (Class of 1954, pictured right) and Raymer F. Maguire (Class of 1948, pictured far right).

Eight law students to become judicial clerks

Eight law students have been selected by federal and state judges to serve as clerks upon graduation from UF Law. A judicial clerkship provides a rich learning environment and professional development opportunity whether obtained immediately upon graduation or one to two years after practicing law. The Center for Career Development has many resources available to assist both UF Law students and alumni seeking judicial clerkships.

UF Trial Team wins Florida Bar Competition

The University of Florida Levin College of Law Trial Team won first place – which amounts to the state championship – at the highly-competitive Florida Bar Chester Bedell Memorial Mock Trial Competition Jan. 20-21 in Orlando. This marks the sixth time UF Law has won the prestigious competition. Members of the winning team include Dana DiSano (awarded Best Advocate), Dan Hogan, Kevin Sharbaugh and Melissa Welch. Also competing from the team were Wayne Atkinson, Allison Kirkwood, Jamie Stephens and Kara Wick. Others integral to the team's success were James Baley, Rhett Parker, Tania Alavi and Nick Zissimopulos.

UF law school first to open all-inclusive domestic violence clinic

[Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Clinic]

A $449,785 U.S. Department of Justice grant to the University of Florida Levin College of Law will fund a unique collaborative effort to assist low-income domestic-violence victims with comprehensive legal, medical, mental and social services in one location. The new Intimate Partner Violence Assistance Clinic is a partnership between the UF College of Law Center on Children and Families and Virgil D. Hawkins Civil Legal Clinics, UF's College of Medicine, Shands HealthCare, and Gainesville's nonprofit Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network.

Tritt, Davis honored as Professor, Student of the Year

When Rob Davis found out he was going to argue in front of Chief Justice John Roberts last year he said he was surprised and thought someone was pranking him. He was surprised again this semester when he was named Student of the Year by JMBA. "There were five people who were finalists and they're great people, so that's a question I had. Why me?" Davis said. "But it's certainly an honor." Davis (pictured far right) won Student of the Year while Professor Lee-ford Tritt (pictured right) won Professor of the Year for the second consecutive year.

Five law students inducted into UF Hall of Fame

Five UF Law students were inducted into the UF Hall of Fame in April for their outstanding achievements and contributions to the University of Florida. Since 1921, the University of Florida Hall of Fame has recognized seniors and graduate students who have consistently demonstrated an outstanding commitment to improving the University of Florida through campus and community involvement, participation in organized campus activities, and scholastic achievement. It is one of the most prestigious honors awarded to students by the Division of Student Affairs at the University of Florida. CGR symposium addresses free press issues in the Americas

Freedom of expression and the right to access information must be protected as basic components to a free and democratic society, said experts at the annual Center for Governmental Responsibility symposium on April 15. This year's symposium, "Threats to Freedom of Expression, Freedom of the Press and Access Laws throughout the Americas," addressed the benefits, challenges and current status of these issues from several different perspectives. Professor Jon Mills, dean emeritus and director of the Center for Governmental Responsibility introduced and facilitated a panel of experts as they each made separate but complimentary presentations on the topic.

SALSA and HLLSA merge to form new Latino/a Law School Association

We are pleased to announce that two Hispanic organizations at UF Law (HLLSA and SALSA) have merged to create a new organization named the Latino/a Law School Association (LLSA). The new executive board, along with advisor Professor Berta Hernandez-Truyol, hopes the result will be a stronger organization with the purpose of reaching out to and including all Latino/a law students. "I am very excited about the merger and want to offer our members a great first year by providing them with the opportunity to attend academic events and socials and participate in community service where they can have fun in a friendly, relaxing environment," said President Carmen Tankersley. The executive board (pictured above) includes: Carmen Tankersley, president; Benjamin Goodman, vice president; Mirelis Torres, secretary; and Gabriel Alonso, treasurer.

CSRRR spring lecture discusses affirmative action

"I am a product of affirmative action," Robert Chang (pictured right) stated as he spoke to the Levin College of Law on April 1, as the featured speaker for the Center for the Study of Race and Race Relations spring lecture. Chang, professor and founding director of the Fred T. Korematsu Center for Law and Equality at Seattle University, is an accomplished scholar, talented writer, successful lawyer, and himself a beneficiary of affirmative action.

Real property law theorist delivers UF Law Wolf Family Lecture in the American Law of Real Property

Using abstract and provocative theories to address the dispossession of property as a result of Florida's housing crisis, Lee Ann Fennell (pictured right), professor of law, University of Chicago Law School, explored the complex relationship between property rights and continuity of possession during the March 17 UF Law Wolf Family Lecture in the American Law of Real Property. "First of all, instead of thinking about possession, I want you to think about dispossession," Fennell said. "Unfortunately, this does not require a lot of imagination because we have this housing crisis going on around us and there is a lot of it happening right here in Florida."

Moring and Aronovitz prevail in Maguire Appellate Advocacy Competition

Florida Moot Court Team members David Hughes, C. Andrew Roy, Philip Moring (pictured right), and Cary Aronovitz (supported by alternates Kevin Combest and Shelly Garg) argued before a panel of five retired chief justices of the Florida Supreme Court in the 26th Annual Maguire Appellate Advocacy Competition on March 5. The distinguished panel of retired chief justices, all of whom are UF Law alumni, included the Hon. Harry Lee Anstead (JD 63), Hon. Stephen H. Grimes (JD 78), Hon. Parker Lee McDonald (JD 50), Hon. Ben F. Overton (JD 67), and Hon. Charles T. Wells (JD 64).

Music Law: Getting into the groove of the digital age

The digitization of music has transformed the music industry, marginalizing the role of record labels and placing greater power in the hands of consumers. This sea-change in how music is marketed was the topic of the day at the eighth annual UF Music Law Conference, held at the UF Levin College of Law on Feb. 27. Environmental conference focuses on leadership and local impact

[Public Interest Environmental Conference]

The idea of environmental protection often conjures up thoughts of faraway places, most of which we've never seen. Whether it's ice caps, rainforests, or the middle of the ocean, we don't think of the issue as being close by or tangible. Even the Everglades are hundreds of miles away. But there is much to be done for the environment, and much happening, in our own neighborhoods. Conference addresses flaws in juvenile justice system

On Feb. 19 and 20, the Levin College of Law hosted a Juvenile Justice Law conference titled, "Juvenile Justice: Passages, Prevention and Intervention," as a means of providing a forum for the sharing of ideas and information regarding how the juvenile justice law system should be changed to provide for better outcomes for juveniles. During the two days of the conference, distinguished scholars from all over the United States presented various theories and supporting research as to why the present juvenile justice system is inadequate and how it should be reformed. Federal courts scholar offers insight on qualified immunity during Dunwody Lecture

Some see it as a legal loophole for errant government officials. Others view it as a necessary doctrine to protect police officers from the liability for bad outcomes in doing their difficult jobs. But most scholars agree it has turned into something like constitutional quicksand because of the way the U.S. Supreme Court has formulated the doctrine. Prominent federal courts scholar John C. Jeffries Jr. (pictured above), the David and Mary Harrison Distinguished Professor of Law at the University of Virginia, provided his legal insight regarding qualified immunity as the speaker for the Florida Law Review's 29th annual Dunwody Distinguished Lecture.

Nelson Symposium discusses local government liability under federal law

On Feb. 12, local and national experts gathered at the UF Hilton for the Richard E. Nelson Symposium, with this year's event titled, "Local Government Liability Under Federal Law: Regulating the Sacred and the Profane." Dean Robert Jerry began the event by expressing his appreciation for the symposium's namesake, whose generosity made it possible to bring Professor Michael Allan Wolf (pictured above) to UF Law as the Richard E. Nelson Chair in Local Government Law.

Prominent antitrust scholar presents inaugural Heath Lecture

UF Law welcomed Professor Herbert Hovenkamp (pictured right), Ben and Dorothy Willie Chair at the University of Iowa College of Law, to campus on Feb. 5 to speak in the Inaugural Bayard Wickliffe Heath Memorial Lecture Series on U.S. Antitrust Policy. Dr. James McClave, president and founder of Info Tech, gave a brief introduction about Heath, whom he worked with since 1990. McClave described Heath as innovative, passionate, irreplaceable and determined.

Symposium reveals reality of human trafficking in Alachua County

In 2010, slavery is still alive and well. According to statistics compiled by the U.S. Department of State and distributed by the sponsors of the Levin College of Law Human Trafficking Symposium, 27 million people worldwide are slaves, dehumanized and traded as commodities. On Jan. 28, the Levin College of Law hosted a Human Trafficking Symposium, which included a presentation by Dr. Luz E. Nagle (pictured right) and a panel discussion featuring local Alachua County experts explaining the scope of human trafficking in Alachua County. The symposium served as the capstone presentation to a week-long initiative sponsored by LexisNexis, CARIB-LAW, the Immigration Law Association, and the Association for Public Interest Law to foster awareness and discussion among the law school community.

Sports Law Symposium sheds light on collective bargaining agreements

If the predictions of many in the sports law world come true, fans should gear up for some interruptions in play in the near future and some extreme changes in sports way down the road. Over a dozen prominent players in the sports world were on hand on Jan. 29 for the Entertainment and Sports Law Society's 2010 Sports Law Symposium. Many spoke about the future of sports and three panels spoke about the expiring collective bargaining agreements (CBAs) in Major League Baseball, the National Basketball Association and the National Football League.
