ABA President and UF Law grad Stephen N. Zack delivers Marshall M. Criser Distinguished Lecture

[Stephen Zack]
There have been plenty of great lawyers in American history. These include lawyers who wrote the Constitution, lawyers who wrote the Declaration of Independence, lawyers who saved our nation and lawyers who fought for civil rights. "How will this generation of lawyers be remembered?" asked Stephen N. Zack (JD 71) American Bar Association president and this year's Marshall M. Criser Distinguished Lecturer. The lecture series started at 2 p.m. Friday, Oct. 8, in the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom, followed by the ABA presidential portrait unveiling.

Corporate tax issues examined at inaugural tax policy lecture

[Jane Gravelle]
During the inaugural Ellen Bellet Gelberg Tax Policy Lecture at the University of Florida Levin College of Law on Friday, Nov. 12, guest speaker Jane Gravelle was quick to point out that she wasn't talking about lunch when she discussed Google's recent "Double Irish" and "Dutch Sandwich." The terms refer to strategies that the large corporation recently used to avoid the United States' 35 percent corporate income tax, said Gravelle, senior specialist in economic policy in the Government and Finance Division of the Congressional Research Service. Instead, they moved profits through Irish and Dutch companies and they eventually settled in Bermuda where Google paid a much lower 2.4 percent corporate income tax.

Woodhouse delivered her lecture, "Regulating the Global Market in Babies: No Private Placements, No Choice of Color, No Returns," to over 100 UF Law students, faculty and guests for the Fifth Annual Weyrauch Distinguished Lecture in Family Law.

IRS Chief Counsel William Wilkins visits UF Law

[William Wilkins
Adaptation to one's environment is key to survival, and while that may have first been observed in the animal world, it holds true in many circumstances. The IRS faces the same challenge, and on Thursday, Oct. 7, IRS Chief Counsel William Wilkins described to students what the service is doing to adapt to the changing circumstances of today's world. Many people might be surprised to learn that the Office of Chief Counsel has around 2,500 employees, which is no small number.

Members of UF Class of 1960 reunite at Grand Guard luncheon

[Grand Guard]
Fifty years ago, the Fredric G. Levin College of Law was simply the College of Law. Fifty years ago, the law school was housed in Bryan Hall on University Avenue and Southwest 13th Street. Fifty years ago, the law curriculum took two years instead of three years to complete. And now 50 years later, the college welcomed back some of the members of the University of Florida class of 1960. Eight UF Law and UF alumni joined Dean Robert Jerry for a Grand Guard luncheon on Friday, Nov. 5, in the faculty lounge. Alumni not only caught up on old times, but they also learned of new developments with the law school and discussed new developments in the legal profession.

Professor, UF grad returns to discuss LatCrit legal scholarship movement

[Francisco Valdes]
A grey, collarless shirt fits snugly to his slim, athletic build, and his salt-and-pepper hair is tied up in a pony tail as Francisco Valdes (JD 84) backs away from the lectern, then shifts on his heels and paces forward. He extends his arms to his left and grabs the ideas hanging there; he reaches to his right, grasping the historical figures who loiter nearby. These phantoms were Valdes' dancing partners as the University of Miami law professor lectured Monday, Nov. 15, to a group of faculty at the University of Florida Levin College of Law.

Information sought on UF Law government and political leaders

Florida House Speaker Dean Cannon (JD 92) is a UF Law alum. Do you know University of Florida Levin College of Law alumni who have risen to similar heights within government or elected office? We're looking for leaders of legislative bodies, U.S. senators or congressmen, Cabinet secretaries, mayors of big cities or governors. They will be included in a future issue of UF LAW, the law school's alumni magazine. Contact UF LAW Editor Rick Goldstein at goldstein@law.ufl.edu with the person's name, position, city of residence and contact information.

Alumni mentors wanted for student organizations

The alumni mentor program seeks members of the legal profession who are willing to volunteer their time to serve as mentors to students in various areas of law. In this role, the mentor would serve as a resource for a student who is interested in the mentor's area of practice or region where he or she is practicing. Some of those groups include the Environmental and Land Use Law Program, OutLaw, BLSA and many others. The time commitment would be minimal and contacts can be made by phone and e-mail. Please contact career development if you are interested in participating.
