UF Law celebrates opening of Advocacy Center courtroom, welcomes Levins, David Westin

[Advocacy Center opening]
More tears than one might expect accompanied the Feb. 24 dedication of a new 4,000-square-foot courtroom in the Martin H. Levin Advocacy Center on the campus of the University of Florida Fredric G. Levin College of Law. "I'm very privileged and honored to do this for Allen and to live the legacy of this incredible family," Teri Levin told a crowd of about 150 in the courtroom, her voice breaking. "And I will say, and I will continue to say: Go Gators!" Teri Levin's $1 million donation in the name of her late husband, Allen Levin, a Pensacola developer, will allow the second floor of the 19,500-square-foot center to be completed.

Tax Moot Court team places first in national competition

[Tax Moot Court]
Todd Lewis knows a thing or two about James Baley's talent. As co-coach for the University of Florida's 2011 Tax Moot Court team, Lewis has helped Baley (3L) prepare for the national competition since December. And last month, the three-member UF team took first prize at the competition in St. Petersburg with Baley also claiming the title of Best Individual Oralist. But Lewis knows, perhaps better than most, just how good Baley and the rest of the UF team are — Baley and UF beat Lewis' school, Charleston School of Law, in the 2010 competition.

UF Law student serves on Gov. Scott's Transition Team

[Ryan Moseley, Tim Tebow]
In November, Ryan Moseley (3L) was made an offer he couldn't refuse. The election of a new governor required a transition team to put the incoming administration in touch with the status of various sections of state government. Of particular importance was the Florida Department of Health, which not only is weathering rough economic conditions but also stands to undergo significant changes thanks to the recently enacted federal health care law. When it came to the attention of the Department of Health team that a well-qualified student was at the Levin College of Law, Moseley was asked to join the group.

Student volunteers make big impact with tax help to 600-plus Gainesville families

[Volunteers in Tax Assistance]
Sonia Singh walked down the stairs leading to the Marcia Whitney Schott Courtyard on a Wednesday night long after the sun had set, tax law textbooks overflowing in her arms. Singh (2L) wondered whether she should retrieve a box of Internal Revenue Service papers from her car after meeting with the federal tax collection agency for two hours earlier that day. For many, the prospect of a two-hour meeting with the IRS might seem distressing. But for Singh, it's business as usual.

A new path for UF Law community

[Walking trail]
It can be difficult to make time for exercise in between all the obligations that come with being a law student, but a new walking trail at the Levin College of Law should make it a little easier to increase heart rates without having to leave the law school campus. The half-mile trail, which circles the UF Law campus, was officially dedicated Jan. 14 with Dean Robert Jerry offering a few remarks, followed by Professor Lyrissa Lidsky's running club making the inaugural lap around the trail in the brisk afternoon air. "The trail is a great way to promote fitness at the law school," Jerry said.
