Dean Robert Jerry's band to open for Goo Goo Dolls at Gator Growl Nov. 4

This year's Gator Growl Nov. 4 features performances by comedian Joel McHale, the Goo Goo Dolls and members of Sister Hazel. But there is one more act performing that UF Law alumni and students might not want to miss — a band in which Dean Robert Jerry plays called "in crisis". Dean Jerry, who some know is an amateur musician with, as he says it, "aspirations exceeding his talents," will play the electric piano and synthesizer while the band plays a medley of songs from the '60s through '80s. In addition to Dean Jerry, in crisis is comprised of College of Design, Construction and Planning Dean Chris Silver, School of Architecture Director Martin Gold, School of Architecture Assistant Director John Maze, Architecture Adjunct Professor Mick Richmond and Computer Programmer-Analyst Andy Shivers. The band came together as a way to rejuvenate musical talents, and, although band members practice irregularly, they have performed at a few campus events. This will be their largest show to date.

CLE opportunity Nov. 11-12: The Global Challenge of International Sales Law

The University of Florida Center for International Business Education & Research and the Warrington College of Business Administration will host a conference on the impact, problems and issues related to the United Nations Convention on Contracts for the International Sale of Goods (CISG). Additional sponsors include the Levin College of Law, United Nations Commission on International Trade Law (UNCITRAL), UF Center for European Studies and the Institute for International Commercial Law (Pace University). The conference, which takes place Nov. 11-12, will be held at the Hilton-UF Conference Center on Southwest 34th Street. The conference will bring together 35 or so scholars, practitioners, and representatives of international organizations from 20 or so countries to present papers in their areas of specialized expertise. Claire M. Germain, UF Law associate dean for legal information and Clarence J. TeSelle Professor of Law, will present "Issues of Translation" at the conference. This conference will provide information on multiple levels — understanding the rules of the CISG, the application of the CISG by signatory countries, theoretical insights, and its use by international transactional attorneys. It will also include a presentation by Luca Castellani, legal officer in the Secretariat of the United Nations Commission on International Trade Law, on the substance and status of complimentary conventions. Nearly 1,400 pack Phillips Center for Poucher Lecture featuring Justice Sandra Day O'Connor

UF Levin College of Law's Florida Law Review brought a quartet of the legal profession's heavy hitters together at the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts where they blasted the practice of using elections in Florida and other states to choose and retain judges. Nearly 1,400 people packed the Phillips Center to see retired U.S. Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor and three other distinguished members of the legal community for the inaugural Allen L. Poucher Lecture Series.

Justice O'Connor, former Gov. Bob Graham join Stephen N. Zack for hall naming

Joined by retired Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O'Connor, former Gov. Bob Graham and UF Law Dean Robert Jerry, alumnus Stephen N. Zack (JD 71) was honored Sept. 12 during the naming ceremony of UF Law's Stephen N. Zack Hall. "There is nothing that I have achieved in my professional life that would have been possible without this university and without this law school," said Zack, immediate past president of the American Bar Association (ABA), at the noon ceremony. The naming follows an $800,000 gift from Zack and his law firm, Boies, Schiller & Flexner LLP, which will be matched by the Legislature to establish the $1.3 million Stephen N. Zack Law Endowment.

Experts examine federal debt at second annual Gelberg tax policy lecture

The federal debt and deficit are rising to never-before-seen heights, and this reality is driving Congress and the president to get serious about deficit reduction. Despite a newfound determination from the political class to deal with the problem, the way forward for federal taxes and budgets remain uncertain, according to three experts who spoke at the University of Florida Levin College of Law. Students, faculty and staff filled the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom, HOL 180, for the second Ellen Bellet Gelberg Tax Policy Lecture on Friday, Sept. 30, when three experienced Washington hands laid out their insights on tax and budget policy. Cornell library chief moves into UF Law's top librarian post, endowed chair

The University of Florida Levin College of Law welcomed Claire M. Germain in early August as the new associate dean for legal information and Clarence J. TeSelle Professor of Law. Germain takes up her post at UF Law after leaving the Cornell University Law School as Edward Cornell law librarian and professor of law. Germain holds law degrees from the University of Paris and Louisiana State University School of Law, and a master's in law librarianship from the University of Denver.

More than 1,000 sink teeth into Glasser Barbecue

Members of the law school community filled the courtyard and lined up nearly to the parking lot Sept. 13 during the much-anticipated Glasser Barbecue. More than 1,000 students, faculty and staff piled their plates high with assortments of chicken, veggie burgers, pulled pork, coleslaw and baked beans and quenched their thirst with sweet tea, sitting in the shade and enjoying the company and great weather. Food and drinks were provided by Hill's Bar-B-Que in Gainesville. The event is sponsored by the Gene K. and Elaine Glasser Endowment.

UF Law ranked No. 7 for Hispanic students

The University of Florida Levin College of Law was ranked No. 7 in HispanicBusiness magazine's 2011 Best Schools for Hispanics. The annual ranking lists the "graduate programs across the U.S. that embody diversity on campus," according to HispanicBusiness. UF Law demonstrated diversity efforts in the areas of Hispanic enrollment, student services, reputation, faculty and retention rate. "I am delighted to see that in my time as member of this faculty enrollment of Latinas/os at the college of law has doubled to better reflect the long-standing and increasing diversity of the state of Florida," said UF Law Professor and Comparative Law Director Pedro Malavet.

UF Law professor's research helped end 'Don't Ask, Don't Tell,' according to new book

University of Florida Levin College of Law Professor Diane Mazur's research helped lead to an end to the "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" policy regarding gays in the military, according to a new book released on Sept. 20, 2011, the day the law was repealed. In How We Won: Progressive Lessons from the Repeal of Don't Ask, Don't Tell, San Francisco State University Political Science Professor Aaron Belkin chronicled the political and legal strategies that opened the door to repeal. In the book, Belkin describes reaching out to Mazur, who is also co-director of the Palm Center, a University of California research center on military issues headed by Belkin.

New UF Law interactive display, online timeline honors struggle for equality

"The Legacy of Virgil D. Hawkins: The Struggle for Equality at the University of Florida," an innovative multi-media exhibit in the lobby of the Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center, was unveiled Sept. 2 at a reception during UF's Black Alumni weekend. Speakers included UF Law Dean Robert Jerry; Chief Judge of the Northern District of Florida Stephan P. Mickle, the first African-American to earn an undergraduate degree from UF (BA 65, M.Ed 66, JD 70); and W. George Allen (JD 62), the first African-American to graduate from UF Law.

Author of How Our Tax System is Making Us Poorer delivers statistics, case at UF Law

Are we in the midst of a transformation from a Robin Hood tax system to one that has more in common with Ebenezer Scrooge? Pulitzer Prize winner and former New York Times reporter David Cay Johnston made that case Aug. 26 at the Levin College of Law, presenting data showing taxes have become an ever-greater burden on the poor and middle classes, while taxes on the rich — especially the super-rich — have fallen dramatically as a proportion of their income.

Recent grad wins national essay contest

An article submitted as a final paper in Professor Robin Davis' Mediation course earned one graduate a national title, a spot on the American Board Association's website and $1,000. Jon Philipson's (JD 11) essay, entitled "The Kids Are Not All Right: Mandating Peer Mediation as an Anti-Bullying Measure in Schools," was selected mid-August as the winning entry the 2011 James B. Boskey Law Student Essay Contest on Dispute Resolution. "Issues and policies involving children and their development have always been an interest of mine," Philipson said.

NCAA football-players-turned-law-students take an academic star turn

Sean Bedford — a first-year law student, 6-foot-1, two-time first team All Atlantic Coast Conference center, aerospace engineer, former Gainesville Sun Scholar Athlete of the Year and seemingly perfect embodiment of everything a young man should be — is tired. The former Georgia Tech offensive line standout isn't tired from his twice-daily workout regimen, which is a shadow of his football-playing days, or from the demands of his first weeks in law school – after undergraduate classes like fluid dynamics and aero-elasticity at Georgia Tech, Bedford talks about his torts textbook like it's a vacation.
