UF Women Reports

Events

The Steering Council of UF Women is pleased to share with you that we will be changing the date of our annual symposium from spring to January. Thanks to all of you for your input on our recent survey. The next symposium will be in January 2015 in Gainesville.

Meanwhile, we will put our efforts in the next year or so in holding a variety of regional events: small luncheons, cocktail parties, etc., to bring new women into the fold of UFW. If any of you would like to consider hosting an event, please let me know. We'd be so happy to discuss and to assist.

University welcomes new Dean of Nursing Anna McDaniel and Dean Julie Johnson of Pharmacy

DeanMcDanielThe announcement of Dr. McDaniel as Dean followed a rigorous national search. She assumed the role on July 1. McDaniel was drawn to UF because she saw it as a natural fit for her talents and skills. She feels her strength as a "connector" between people and ideas will serve her well in this new role. One of her favorite things about being a leader is bringing together a team of people with varying strengths who can focus on a shared goal.

UF Coleus Breeding Program

UFColeusBreedingThe UF coleus breeding program has gained an international reputation for producing colorful new plants that perform well in seasonal gardens across the United States. The program was initiated in 2003, with the first new varieties hitting US markets in 2006-2007. Since that time, the program has developed solid relationships with three large companies who license and commercialize the plants across the US. The plants are now moving into Canada, Europe and Asia, and over two dozen new varieties from the program are now on the market. Each year, the program produces literally hundreds of new selections, all of which are trialed at our farms on campus and in Citra, Florida. On an average year, approximately 5 plants from each season get commercialized by our corporate licensees. For more information on the UF Breeding Program, click here.

Universities Just As Great As Ivy League – UF Ranks #2

When choosing a college to attend, it is easy to understand the allure of an Ivy League school. With a great reputation, one might easily think that attending and graduating a prestigious school like Harvard or Yale would lead to hire paying careers. However, some public universities are making moves to prove they are the better option. With a freshmen retention rate of 96% and tuition cheaper than Ivy League universities, the University of Florida has been ranked #2 as a viable alternative. For more, click here.
