[Horse Farm Hundred 2005 participants]
2005 Horse Farm Hundred participants race for the finish line. Find out more information about the 2006 race here.

Pre-Game Tail-Gate Gatherings
The college has designated a location for pre-game tail-gate gatherings on our campus. The pre-game tail-gate gatherings may be held in the blue decal parking lot behind the Veterinary Academic Building. There is space available for shade tents, grills, tables and also access to restrooms in the VAB. Football season started Sept. 2. Cool libations for the Gator Nation!

[FAEP Logo]FAEP 2nd Annual Promoting Exccellence Symposium
The Florida Association of Equine Practitioners 2nd annual Promoting Excellence Symposium is scheduled for September 21-24, 2006 at Sandestin Golf and Beach Resort, Destin, Florida. The alumni reception is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 23, at 6:30 PM at Hammerhead’s Bar & Grill (in The Village of Baytowne Wharf). Read More >>

Homecoming 2006
[Gator Growl 2006]The University of Florida Homecoming Celebration “Relive the Tradition” is scheduled for Friday, Oct. 6 and Saturday, Oct. 7.The Gators take on the LSU Tigers in an exciting gridiron “Swamp fest.”  The college has Gator Growl tickets available for purchase. We will also have our annual pre-game meal and celebration. Registration closed September 15th and all football tickets were sold.  See you in October!! Read More >>

Alumni Council Meeting is scheduled for Saturday, Oct. 7, 4.5 hours before game kick-off.

Horse Farm Hundered
Team VetMed
rides the Horse Farm Hundred on Sunday, October 22, 2006. Start training to ride with Dr. Jim Thompson. Become one of the “domestiques” and help Thompson ride the century and raise money for student scholarships.

A second Team VetMed group will ride the RUSH 55, a 55-mile loop starting with the century pack at Morningside Nature Center, stopping in Flemington and returning to Gainesville. From the finish line, you can cheer on the Team VetMed century riders as they come in.

All riders must register with the Gainesville Cycling Club for the 100, 55, or 25 mile rides. Read More >>

College of Veterinary Medicine dean named
Glen F. Hoffsis, DVM, was named dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at the University of Florida. His appointment is effective October 1, 2006.

Most recently, Dr. Hoffsis served as the associate director of veterinary services for IAMS, a Proctor & Gamble company. This position enabled him to visit colleges of veterinary medicine throughout the country and learn about their programs and strengths. Prior to that, Hoffsis served as dean of the College of Veterinary Medicine at The Ohio State University for 11 years.

University Unveiled a New Logo
The University of Florida has unveiled a new logo. The state seal is no longer included in the logo and was replaced with the monogram “UF.” You will see more of the logos in our publications, Web sites and other UF materials. The Foundation for the Gator Nation. Read More>>

Welcome Class of 2010
The College of Veterinary Medicine welcomed 88 new freshmen students and their parents to a Welcome and Family Day Celebration on August 18. These students were selected out of 799 applicants to become Gators. The class breakdown includes 23 males, 65 females, and an average age of 24.2 years. Thirty-two students have animal science degrees and 31 students have biological sciences degrees. While 37 students graduated from UF, other state universities (FSU, FAU, UM, FAMU, USF) supplied 16 students. Welcome to the Gator Nation! [Dr. James Himes]

Happy Birthday, Dr. Himes
Dr. James Himes celebrated his 87th birthday last month. Himes comes to work every day to counsel pre-vet students.

9/11 Remembered
On September 11, 2002, former dean Joe DiPietro dedicated a flag pole display in honor of 9/11. The plaque reads, “In memory of the human and animal victims of the Sept. 11, 2001 tragedy by the UF College of Veterinary Medicine faculty, staff and students.”

Distinguished Awards Nominations are due November 15, 2006!
It’s that time of year again when you have an opportunity to nominate outstanding alumni, deserving veterinarians, and those who have served the college in some special way. We need your help to bring deserving candidates to our attention for the Distinguished Awards program.

The nomination form is located on the CVM Web site http://www.vetmed.ufl.edu/alumni and click on Distinguished Awards Program. A complete listing of previous recipients is listed there also.
