Dr. Stephen Hines, '89, is a professor of veterinary microbiology & pathology at Washington State University. He holds the Berger Keatts Distinguished professorship position.

Dr. Kate (Monroe) Cole,‘92, has relocated to Sarasota after living in Hollywood, CA for the past 15 years.

Dr. Jennifer Garriga,, '99, is the chief of staff/partner of Boynton Beach and West Palm Beach Banfield, the Pet Hospitals.

Dr. Lillian Felz,, '00, had a baby boy, Logan Wolf Lambert, in January 2007.

Shawn Gorman, MS, '01, currently practicing property law at Banner & Witcoff, LTD in Chicago with several clients in the veterinary field. The Gormans also have a new baby, Caitlin Riley Gorman.

Dr. Heather Caplan, '06, accepted an associate's position at Virginia Equine in Richmond and starts in July.

College phone number changes
Effective June 1, 2007, the main college telephone number – 392-4700 – is longer be in service.  As our college has grown, so have our telephone numbers.  New department direct dial numbers took effect June 1, 2007. Make note of these changes:

  • College Administration: 352-392-2213 (Admissions, Alumni Affairs, Dean's Office, Development, and Pet Memorial Program)
  • Large Animal Clinical Sciences: 352-392-2212
  • Small Animal Clinical Sciences: 352-392-2226
  • Large Animal Hospital: 352-392-2229
  • Small Animal Hospital: 352-392-2235
  • Racing Lab: 352-392-2238
  • Infectious Diseases and Pathology: 352-392-2239
  • Center for Environmental and Human Toxicology: 352-392-2243
  • Physiological Sciences: 352-392-2246

Extension numbers remain the same.  When calling the college, dial the new department direct number, press "1" and the extension number to reach your party.

The college e-mail address system has changed too.  The address "…@mail.vetmed.ufl.edu" is now "…@vetmed.ufl.edu".  The college has dropped the "mail."  All messages will be re-directed to the new address.  This makes the address a little shorter and more compatible with log-ins. Don't know much about Theriogenology?
Professor Emeritus Maarten Drost, DVM, Dipl ACT, has devoted his life's work to livestock reproduction. Drost recently completed The Drost Project Visual Guides, an online resource for the teaching of veterinary and animal science students, and as a reference for specialists in the field of reproduction. The Web atlas has reproductions info on Bovine, Bubaline and Ovine. The Equine and Canine sections will be available in a few months. Vet Med Bookstore News
Vet Med Bookstore Manager Mary O'Neal announced recently that the bookstore now carries two CVM professors' new books.  Dr. Elliott Jacobson's book, "Infectious Diseases and Pathology of Reptiles," was published by CRC Press and is priced at $199.95.

Dr. Maureen Long's book "Equine Infectious Disease" was published by Elsevier and is priced at $149.00.  Both books are in stock at the bookstore.

Another one bites the dust
Joe's Deli, a historical gator gathering spot since 1975, has closed its SW 13th Street location, according to The Gainesville Sun, June 3, edition.  In business for 32 years, many UF and CVM students have passed through Joe's during their time at UF.

Start training for the Horse Farm Hundred – 10 years and 1,000 miles
Team VetMed is getting ready for the October Horse Farm Hundred ride. Now is the time to become a sponsor for the Team VetMed custom-designed jersey. The jersey design and sponsorship opportunities are posted on the Team VetMed Web site. Training schedules are posted as well as weekly rides and other training activities.

UF Homecoming Weekend 2007
The UF Homecoming Weekend 2007 is scheduled for November 2 & 3, 2007.  The Gators take on the Vanderbilt Commodores in The Swamp.

Gator Growl 2007The CVM will have limited football tickets, Gator Growl tickets, and celebration meal tickets available for sale to our alumni.  We have also secured room blocks at 3 Gainesville hotels for our out-of-towners. Hotel information is posted on our web site, so make your reservations today! Read More >>

CVM Homecoming Save the Date cards will be mailed around June 2007 and all additional information will be posted on the CVM Web site.  Registration will not begin until September.

Class Reunions

  • The Class of 1997 is planning a 10-year reunion during FVMA 2007. For more information, contact Cherry Douglas or Joell Sheahan.
  • The Class of 1987 is planning a 20th reunion cruise for July 20-23, 2007 on Royal Caribbean Sovereign of the Seas.  If you are interested in attending this reunion, please contact Mark Gendzier.

The Class Representatives for 1983, 1988, 1993, 1998 and 2003 should start talking about class reunions for 2008.

Gators in the Wild
The UF Alumni Association and Busch Gardens, Tampa Bay, present "Gators in the Wild" Saturday, July 14, 2007 for $35 per person.  The costs includes a 6 PM entrance with regular day guests; unlimited access to attractions and shows; one meal and 1 non-alcoholic drink voucher that can be redeemed at designated park areas; and a Gator only "Party in the Park" from 10 PM to midnight.

Florida Museum opens shark exhibit featuring 60-foot-long megalodon
Florida Museum opens shark exhibit featuring 60-foot-long megalodon At 60 feet long, megalodon was the largest shark that ever lived and a dominant marine predator. Sharks are at risk today, with recent population declines attributed to humans. Though megalodon vanished 2 million years ago, its fascinating story inspires lessons for science and shark conservation.

The Florida Museum of Natural History tells this remarkable story in its exciting new national traveling exhibition, "Megalodon: Largest Shark that Ever Lived." The exhibition features a 60-foot-long walk-through sculpture and highlights the evolution, biology and misconceptions regarding giant prehistoric sharks. Read More >>

Gator MerchandiseThe five starters on Florida's back-to-back national championship basketball teams, plus sixth-man Chris Richard, have become co-signers on a limited number of commemorative basketballs. Only 200 of the balls were signed by all six players and fewer than 100 remain available to the general public. There is a limit of two basketballs per customer. In addition to the basketballs, the players have signed a limited number of the Michael Montgomery art prints depicting the Gators' dual national championships. There is a limit of one print per customer. Framed prints are also available, but allow three weeks for shipping of framed print orders.
