  BUILDING COMMUNITY MAY 2009
[Dan Williams: Talking Water in Florida]

(l to r) Chris Sorce, Alex Ruhnau, Chris Anderson, architecture professor Mark McGlothlin, and Clay Anderson package the model pieces into a suitcase that will be escorted to Spain by Alex Ruhnau.

Carrying precious cargo

How do you transport a model from Gainesville, Fla., to Madrid, Spain? As a carry-on, of course.

This month, as part of the two-year international competition, the UF Solar Decathlon Team needed to deliver their house model for a workshop in Madrid. After researching the costs for shipping the model, they discovered it was cheaper to send the model on a commercial airline with a team member. So on May 9, Alex Ruhnau boarded a flight with two specially designed carry-ons which housed components of the model.
