When did you become a Florida Gator?

Dean Christopher Silver

Dean Christopher Silver

As the new school year begins and with the opening of football season just days away, we find ourselves reminiscing about our days on campus as a student or of the times in the Swamp watching history unfold on Florida Field. Dean Christopher Silver shares his memory of becoming a Gator as part of the "When did you become a Florida Gator" campaign.

We asked Buddy Jacobs, chair of the DCP Florida Tomorrow Campaign Council and former UF student body president, when he became a Gator:

"In 1960, when I was in high school. I was elected president of the Florida Youth Workshop, which was a gathering of all high school student council presidents from across the state. There I made many lifelong friends and met Dr. J. Wayne Reitz. I loved that he used to say that 'UF is a place that is wonderfully stirred up.' I was admitted to UF in 1961."

You can share your memory at Inside the Gator Nation. Already posted your story? Please let us know.

As we kick off the new academic year, we'd like to thank the members of the DCP Florida Tomorrow Campaign Council for their dedicated efforts toward reaching our campaign goal. To date, DCP has raised $10.2 million.

The Florida Tomorrow Campaign is the campaign for the University of Florida. Through the efforts of the DCP council and with the support of DCP alumni and friends, the College of Design, Construction and Planning is building a place where educators and students work to envision, design, create and preserve renewable and affordable communities.

WHEN DID YOU BECOME A
FLORIDA GATOR?

Stories from the Web site

Ashley Says:
March 26th, 2009 at 9:32 am

I became a Gator at the 1997 Florida-Florida State game. I was only 7 at the time, but I had been going to football games with my dad for a few years. We were trailing 29-25 in the 4th quarter. I was tearing up, because I didn’t think we’d pull it off. My dad looked at me and said “Miracles happen in the Swamp Ashley!” What seemed like seconds later, if my memory hasn’t failed me, Jacquez Green caught a pass that set up a Fred Taylor touchdown run. We won 32-29. I lost my dad to cancer just 3 years later. I have continued to go to just about every single home game with my mom, and I can really feel his presence each time I walk into the stadium. I am currently a freshman at the University of Florida, and I couldn’t be happier. It all started with that single scoring drive: the passion I developed for this University at the age of 7 was incredibly intense, and I’m proud to say I’ve only gotten more passionate over the years. GO GATORS!
