The Florida Bar Mid-Year UF Law Alumni Reception Jan. 15

The Levin College of Law will hold its annual alumni reception at The Florida Bar 2009 Mid-year Meeting on Thursday, Jan. 15, from 6:30-8 p.m. at the Hyatt Regency Miami. This reception, open to all UF law alumni, will provide alumni of the college with the opportunity to network and reconnect with friends and colleagues from all around the state. Dean Jerry will update those attending with the latest news from the college. If you would like to attend this reception, e-mail development@law.ufl.edu with your name and guest information or call 352-273-0640. Sponsorships are $250 for individuals, $1,000 for a firm. UF Law Spring Conferences and Symposiums

The spring semester is full of rich teaching and learning opportunities for students, alumni and friends of the College of Law. With symposiums, conferences and lectures on topics ranging from music and sports to government and the environment, experts and professionals from a variety of fields come together to discuss important legal issues. Spring Book Award Ceremony Feb. 27

Students, faculty and friends of the law school will gather in the Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom Feb. 27 at 3:30 p.m. to honor Book Award recipients for the fall 2008 semester. Presented every semester, Book Awards recognize the top performers in each class, and give alumni a chance to support academic excellence at the Levin College of Law. A small reception in the courtyard will be held immediately following the ceremony.

Crist names Labarga to Florida Supreme Court

Gov. Charlie Crist appointed UF Law alumnus Jorge Labarga to the Florida Supreme Court on Jan. 2. Labarga (JD 79), of Welington, Fla., was a state circuit judge who Crist appointed to an appellate court position just last month. He was named to fill the vacancy created by the retirement of Justice Harry Lee Anstead. A Cuban-born lawyer and double Gator, Labarga has been a circuit judge since 1996 and was a public defender and prosecutor before that in a legal career that has spanned 28 years.

Justice Stevens and Judge Gonzalez speak at inaugural Marshall Criser Lecture

Justice John Paul Stevens and Judge Jose A. Gonzalez Jr. devoted part of their joint presentation on the UF Campus on Nov. 17 to offering free advice to law students. Stevens, the most senior United States Supreme Court Justice, said lawyers often overlook oral arguments in their cases.

Conference examines electronic discovery legal issues

It's time for the legal profession to move into the 21st century and for law students to consider a new and rapidly expanding field. A distinguished group of experts spoke about the importance of electronic discovery on Oct. 28, at the "E-Discovery Evening," which was co-sponsored by The Sedona Conference and the Levin College of Law. "The Levin College of Law is one of the first law schools in the nation to offer a course in what is being called 'E-Discovery,'" said UF Law Dean Robert Jerry. "We're very pleased that, thanks to Adjunct Professor Bill Hamilton, we are also now the first to co-sponsor a conference on the topic with the very well-respected Sedona Conference."

Walter Weyrauch: Five decades of scholarship

Walter O. Weyrauch, distinguished professor and Steven C. O'Connell Chair, died Oct. 17 at the age of 89. A memorial service will be held on Sunday, March 22, at noon in the Levin College of Law Chesterfield Smith Ceremonial Classroom (180 Holland). "Walter has been an active presence at the law school. Many of our students and faculty knew him and will mourn his passing." Weyrauch reached a remarkable, record-setting milestone this year — 51 years of continuous teaching at a single school.

Dexter Delony leaves a lasting impression

Professor Emeritus Dexter Delony, passed away Oct. 16, following a long illness. He was 91. Delony taught at UF Law for more than 30 years, educating thousands of Florida's lawyers and leaders, including former governors Lawton Chiles and Rueben Askew. As a professor, Delony was revered by his students for teaching classes that successfully combined a generous helping of both theoretical law and its application. He retired from UF Law in 1983 and stated he was very proud to have seen the dramatic increase in women law students during his tenure at UF.

Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center receives "green" rating

It's green under the bricks and mortar of the Lawton Chiles Legal Information Center (LIC). The new addition and renovations to the LIC, classrooms and law library were recently certified as a "green" building by the U.S. Green Building Council. The certification is part of the USGBC Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System.

UF Law Graduate Tax Program represented at seminar in Santiago, Chile

On Oct. 6, Professor Yariv Brauner spoke at a seminar held at the Universidad Diego Portales in Santiago, Chile. The seminar titled, "The concept of the beneficial ownership in the International Tax Treaties," was co-sponsored by the law faculty at the Universidad Diego Portales and the International Fiscal Association, IFA Chile. Professor Brauner's talk addressed the limitation on benefits clause in the U.S. Model. Other speakers included Ricardo Escobar, national director of the Internal Revenue Service of Chile and Arturo Garnham, tax law professor at the University Diego Portales and partner in Noguera, Larrain and Dulanto. The moderator for the seminar was Hugo Hurtado, professor of tax law at the University Diego Portales and Universidad Catolica de Chile and graduate of the UF Law LL.M. in International Taxation Program. Professor Brauner was invited by Juan Enrique Vargas, dean of the law faculty at the Universidad Diego Portales and Liselott Kana, president of International Fiscal Association, IFA Chile.

Faculty Book Round-Up

A number of faculty have recently published books. Professor Katheryn Russell-Brown published The Color of Crime, Professor Michael Siegel published Race to Injustice and Professor Michael Allan Wolf published The Zoning of America: Euclid v. Ambler.

Moot Court makes final four in Chicago competition

The Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court Board traveled to Chicago in late November for the annual Chicago Bar Association's National Moot Court Competition. The team of Scott Holtz, Stacey Schwimmer and Tim Haughee made it to the final four (semi-finals), surpassing 26 other teams. Eric Nowak and Danielle Pollock also competed. The teams argued the constitutionality of a gender conscious admissions policy that sought to maintain a gender balance of men and women in its undergraduate admissions. Both teams received assistance from Professors Rambo, Pflaum and Wihnyk. The Justice Campbell Thornal Moot Court Board represents UF Law in numerous state and national appellate advocacy competitions throughout the year. The board was founded in 1961, and was named after the prominent Florida Supreme Court chief justice. Comprised of students from UF Law, the board has received numerous state and national awards.

UF Conservation Clinic Teams Up With Georgia Bulldogs On River Conservation Project

Law students from the University of Florida and the University of Georgia met at the border for something other than football — an opportunity to canoe the St. Mary's River, the boundary water between the two adjoining states. The UF Law Conservation Clinic and the University of Georgia Environmental Law Practicum have teamed up for a trans-boundary water law project that involves researching and petitioning the state of Florida for an Outstanding Florida Water designation for the river (if warranted by research), while designing some sort of similar protection for the river in Georgia — which does not have an analogous regulation.

The Levin College of Law now distributes an electronic "research paper series" that contains abstracts of new publications and works-in-progress by faculty members, with links for downloading full-text articles.
