"100 Years of UF Law" homecoming barbecue Oct. 16

Be our guest at the UF Law Centennial Celebration during UF Homecoming Weekend Friday, Oct. 16, from 2:30 – 4:30 p.m. in the Marcia Whitney Schott Courtyard. Right after the Homecoming Parade, we’ll be serving barbecue dinners to our alumni and extended UF Law family. Save the Date: Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in Law Feb. 16

Join the Florida Law Review for the annual Dunwody Distinguished Lecture in Law celebrating "Florida Law Review’s Contribution to the Courts," on Feb. 16, 2010. The distinguished guest speaker, John C. Jeffries, is a graduate of Yale University and the University of Virginia School of Law where he served as editor-in-chief of the Virginia Law Review. Jeffries, a former clerk to Supreme Court Justice Lewis F. Powell Jr., is an acclaimed federal court and criminal law scholar as well as the Emerson Spies Professor of Law at the University of Virginia School of Law, the former dean of the University of Virginia School of Law, and co-director of the War Powers Commission. Jeffries has co-authored casebooks in federal courts, civil rights, and criminal law and has published a variety of articles in those fields. The Dunwody Lecture Series was established by U.S. Sugar Corporation and the law firms of Dunwody, White, & Landon, P.A. and Mershon, Sawyer, Johnston, Dunwody and Cole in honor of UF law graduates Elliot and Atwood Dunwody. The honorees were brothers who dedicated their lives to the legal profession and who set a standard of excellence for The Florida Bar.

UF Law Grads Excel on Bar Exam

July 2009 results were very strong for the 328 UF grads who took the Florida Bar Exam for the first time and passed at an 86.3 percent rate (7.2 percent above the rate for all other takers). Although UF ranked second among the state's 10 law schools on this test, the University of Florida College of Law still has a better and more consistent pass rate than any other Florida law school, including FSU, which came in first this year.

Mickle named chief judge of the Northern District of Florida

Not only was the Hon. Stephan P. Mickle (JD 70) named chief judge of the Northern District of Florida, but he might also possess supernatural powers. According to UF Levin College of Law Dean Robert Jerry, a response Mickle gave during a past interview should raise some questions about Mickle’s ability to foresee the future. "He said, ‘Once the ball was in my court, I knew I had a responsibility to hit it,’ " Jerry quoted. "Note that in 1962, he was saying the ball was in ‘my court.’ In 1962, he was already thinking of ‘my court,’ so that suggests whether we should wonder whether the judge has some powers to predict the future."

Remembering Frank McCoy

Many members of the UF Law community didn’t know what the law school lost when Professor Frank McCoy passed away on May 22. Despite a life full of accomplishments, McCoy was modest, unassuming and not showy about his life, according to two of his closest friends, Professors Joseph Little and Dennis Calfee. McCoy traveled all over the world, knew at least a dozen languages, was a paratrooper, and worked for the predecessor to the CIA among many other accomplishments. But he’d rarely talk about it.

UF 2L earns spot in prestigious Gubernatorial Fellows program

Second-year law student Ryan Todd has always been interested in politics, so the idea to apply for Florida’s prestigious Gubernatorial Fellows program was a no-brainer. Although Todd did not expect to earn a spot, he was informed in early June that he would spend the next academic year in Tallahassee, Fla. as a fellow. Todd has a political science degree from Duke and worked on the campaign for B.J. Lawson, who was running for the U.S. House of Representatives in North Carolina.

UF collaborative law training teaches innovative conflict-resolution skills

Seventy legal, mental health and financial professionals looking to provide clients with win-win solutions without the stress of a trial attended a recent Collaborative Law Training on the University of Florida Levin College of Law campus. Sponsored by the UF Law Center on Children and Families and Institute for Dispute Resolution, this intensive two-day training provided interdisciplinary professionals with cooperative methods of practice and skills to assist their clients in resolving conflict and reaching a fair and equitable settlement.

UF College of Law ranks in top 10 for Hispanic students

The University of Florida Levin College of Law has again been named one of the top 10 law schools for Hispanics by Hispanic Business Magazine. This marks the seventh time in nine years that the college has earned this distinction for its recruitment, retention and quality education of Hispanic students. The assessment ranked UF Law eighth overall, and fifth among U.S. public schools. Berta Hernandez-Truyol, UF Levin Mabie and Levin Professor of Law and one of four tenured Hispanic faculty, said UF Law provides Hispanic students with a quality education and unique opportunities to become involved in active Hispanic organizations and programs.

International Journal of Intelligence Ethics co-founded by UF Law adjunct professor

Christopher A. Vallandingham, foreign and international law librarian and adjunct professor at the University of Florida Levin College of Law, president of the International Intelligence Ethics Association and chair of the conference committee, along with Jan Goldman, professor at the National Defense Intelligence College and adjunct professor at Georgetown, have founded the International Journal of Intelligence Ethics, to be published by Scarecrow Press of the Rowman and Littlefield Publishing Group beginning in fall 2009. The journal is sponsored by the International Intelligence Ethics Association.
