Welcomed Noah Peavy into the world in June 2009. He serves as associate veterinarian for Ridge Large Animal Veterinary Services in Lake Placid, Florida.

Completed her internship at NYC Veterinary Specialists in New York City. She currently practices as an associate veterinarian at Animal Hospital at Vista Lakes in Orlando.

Veterinary Forensic Science: Bite Marks
workshop is scheduled for September 24-25, 2009, in Orlando. This workshop focuses on the proper techniques in forensic odontology, including proper selection and use of casting materials, etc. The speakers include Dr. Melinda Merck, senior director of veterinary forensic science at UF. The UF Veterinary Medical Center is sponsoring a "Veterinary Receptionist Training Day" and a "Veterinary Technician Program" on Saturday, September 26, 2009, at the Paramount Plaza Hotel, Gainesville. For more information or to register, contact the UF Dept of Conferences.

The 5th Annual Promoting Excellence Symposium, will be held October 1 -3, 2009 at Marco Island, Florida. Faculty members Dr. David Freeman and Dr. Margo Macpherson are scheduled presenters.

Shelter Med Conference October 23 & 24
The College of Veterinary Medicine is committed to enhancement of animal health and welfare. The mission of our new Maddie's® Shelter Medicine Program is to enhance the health and welfare of homeless animals through education, innovation, and advancement of the life-saving goals of sheltering programs.

Veterinarians, technicians, and program managers are invited to two full days of continuing education covering very important challenges in shelters today: strategies for ending the use of euthanasia for population control while transitioning to an "adoption guarantee" management model, using the science of veterinary forensics to fight cruelty, and improving outcomes of impounded animals by controlling infectious diseases in the shelter.

Presenters include UF faculty Drs. Cynda Crawford, Natalie Isaza, Julie Levy and Melinda Merck.

Ride with Team VetMed
Team VetMed is gearing up for the October Horse Farm Hundred ride on Sunday, October 25, 2009. Training schedules are posted on the Web site as well as weekly rides and other training activities.

Each Team VetMed rider is asked to raise $100 in sponsorships. In return, those riders receive a custom-designed Team VetMed jersey. Alumni riders can set up donation cans in the clinics to encourage client donations. Last year, alumni top fundraisers - Julio Ibanez, Wade Matthews, Kris Cooke and Wendy Rib - raised over $5,000.

All monies raised this year will go to the Kevin Anderson Team VetMed Scholarship. Rider sponsorship forms are available on the Team VetMed Website

 

UF CVM Homecoming Celebration Nov 7
Gator LogoCVM Alumni Homecoming Celebration is planned for Saturday, November 7 with the Florida Gators taking on the Vanderbilt Commodores. CVM will host a pre-game meal at the Florida Gym four hours before the game kick-off. The web site has all the information you need to purchase pre-game meal tickets and football tickets (limited to 2 per alumni). Registration begins September 21 on the web.

Hotel info is posted on the Web site. If you plan to attend, you should reserve hotel rooms immediately.

 

Distinguished Awards Nominations due November 15
The annual Distinguished Awards nominations period is open through November 15. The four categories include, Alumni Achievement, Distinguished Service Award, Special Service Award and Outstanding Young Alumni Award.

The nomination form and process are posted on the Web site. Nominate someone today!

CVM & Campus News

Welcome Class of 2013

The Class of 2013 began a week-long orientation process August 11-15. The college had over 900 applicants and admitted 88 students. The final class is composed of 15 males and 73 females, with an average age of 25.1 years. All 88 students have BA/BS degrees while 10 students also hold Master's degrees. Classes started August 17.

The College of Veterinary Medicine welcomes our new residents and interns for 2009-2010. Several are CVM Alumni: Dr. Brian DiGangi, '06, and Dr. Jennifer Owen, '09 – Welcome back home!

 

In Memoriam

It is with great sadness we share the news of two alumni who passed away recently.

Dr. Andrew Mozlin, died July 20, 2009 after a long struggle with health issues. He graduated valedictorian in the Charter Class of the University of Florida College of Veterinary Medicine in 1980. He owned clinics in Miami and Orange Park, Florida, before settling in Wisconsin.

He is survived by his wife Laurel and two children who live in Wisconsin. Mozlin was cremated and a celebration of his life will be held at a synagogue near his birth date September 8. A guest book is available through Legacy.com and MiamiHerald.com/obituaries. Search for Andrew Mozlin.

Dr. Alison Boult Suder, '93, died August 16, 2009 in Tampa, Florida. She practiced for many years in Tampa. She is survived by her husband Brad and two children. A guest book is available through Carrinbridge Web site and search for Alisonsuder.

 

Faculty Promotions

In May 2009, Dean Hoffsis announced the following faculty promotions: Rosanna Marsella to professor; Daniel Brown and Chris Sanchez, '95, to associate professor; Huisheng Xie to clinical associate professor. Congratulations!

 

Vet Med Research and Graduate Program Welcomes New Alumni

The following people completed their non-thesis, thesis and dissertations by August 8, 2009 and were awarded their advanced degrees.

Dr. Weerapongse Tanghitjaroen was awarded a PhD degree.

The thesis-based Master of Veterinary Medical Sciences was awarded to Scott Bailey, Jennifer Cheeseman, Alice Chen, Heather Daniel, Patty Dingman, Nick Doperalski, Fabio Lima and Mario Rabaglino.

The non-thesis Master of Science in Forensic Toxicology was awarded to Marissa Alexander, Christine Frenette, Brittany Martinelli, Cydney Smith, Edwin Smith and Mary Ann Yeager.

 

UF CVM Career Center

The UF CVM maintains a career center Web site for alumni and new grads seeking jobs. Hospitals and clinics are also urged to post job opportunities. It's a win-win situation. More info is posted on the Web site.

 

Class Reunions -

Class reps for 1994, and 2004, should start talking about class reunions for 2009. Reunion plans are in progress for the following classes.

Class of 1999 – had a 10th reunion the weekend of July 25th. Drs. Billy Griswold, Amy Stone and Lisa Farina coordinated the gathering. Check out their reunion photos on facebook.

Class of 1989 – 20th reunion cruise in September – contact Dr. Ron Cooper

Class of 1986Class of 1986 took a reunion cruise in July.  Dr. Moody McCall and Dr. Rob Leonard coordinated the cruise reunion.
