Welcome to the May 2010 CVM alumni e-news, an electronic newsletter designed to keep you up-to-date on college and university alumni activities and news.

Coming Soon - Save The Dates

Commencement May 29
The Class of 2010 Commencement Ceremony is planned for Saturday, May 29 beginning at 2 PM in the Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. The college's largest class ever – 89 students – will take the Veterinarian's Oath and become doctors.

Faculty member Dr. Michael Schaer is the commencement speaker.

On Friday evening before commencement, the Class of 2010 will have its Senior Awards Banquet. Awards recipients and class candidates will be posted on the alumni affairs Web site.

 

Referring Veterinarian Appreciation Day is June 26
The annual RDVM continuing education day is Saturday, June 26 at the Hilton UF Conference Center in Gainesville. The program has a SA and a LA track, as well as the Pharmacy CE. Click here to register or for more info.

 

AVMA Conference July 31-August 3
The American Veterinary Medical Association annual conference is scheduled for July 31 –August 3 in Atlanta, GA. The college will host a UF alumni reception on Monday, August 2. More details to come. For registration info click here.

 

UF CVM Homecoming Celebration 2010 – SAVE THE DATE!
Save the Date: CVM Alumni Homecoming Celebration is planned for Saturday, October 16, with the Florida Gators taking on Mississippi State. This is also the UF Homecoming Weekend. Football tickets and a pre-game meal celebration are being planned. Hotel information is posted on the alumni affairs Web site.

Upcoming Retirements
Dr. Ellis Greiner, ID&P, has announced plans to retire in May. His retirement party is planned for Tuesday, May 25 at 4:30 PM at the Paramount Plaza Hotel. Debbie Couch, department assistant, is collecting photos, emails, cards, and/or letters for a retirement book. You may submit your items via e-mail or call 352.294.4101.

 

Distinguished Award Winners 2010
The UF CVM Alumni Council announces the Distinguished Awards recipients for 2010:

Alumni Achievement Award – Dena Baker, Class of 2000
Distinguished Service Award – Russell J. Snyder, VMD
Special Service Award – Bern M. Levine, DVM
Outstanding Young Alumni Award – Kristin Kirkby, Class of 2003

The Distinguished Awards will be presented at the Class of 2010 Commencement Ceremony Saturday, May 29 beginning at 2 PM in the Curtis H. Phillips Center for the Performing Arts. Please congratulate these winners for their outstanding service to our college and contributions to veterinary medicine.

The Florida Fund is Calling You

The UF Florida Fund will begin calling vet med alumni during May and June. Here’s your chance to update your contact info, especially your email address. The callers will share with you what the college accomplished this past year. Current UF students do all the calling, so chat with one of them for a minute.

Vet Med Research & Graduate Program Welcomes New Alumni

The following people completed their non-thesis, thesis and dissertations by April 2010 and were awarded their advanced degrees.

These doctoral students successfully defended their dissertations by April 2010 to receive the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree: Melissa Bourgeois, Carolina Perez-Heydrich and Tameka Phillips.

Thesis-based Master of Science (MS) in Veterinary Medicine Sciences: Kim Goldbach For the non-thesis, web based Master’s in Forensic Toxicology: Noelle Feldbauer, Steven Fleming, Denise Gilbertson and Darcy Miller.

 

Silver Society Weekend – Class of 1985 25th Reunion

Class of 1985The Class of 1985 celebrated its 25th anniversary reunion at the Silver Society events on Saturday, April 10. The following alumni attended: Rob Boswell, Glenn Ferrall, Geoff Gardner, Diane Lewis, Scott Miller, David Randall, Julia Reynolds, Mary Smart, Ken Snyder, Nanette Parratto-Wagner, and Henry Weinberg.

Alumni Council Spring Meeting

The UF CVM Alumni Council held its spring meeting Saturday, April 17, at 10 AM at the college. Dr. Destiny Prezzano, ’05, is the new alumni council chair and Dr. Julia Conway, ’06, is the chair elect. Dr. Dan Martin was recognized for his service as the alumni council chair for the past two years.

The council voted and passed the Constitution and By-laws revisions that were pended from the fall meeting. Current minutes, department reports, and class reps list are posted on the alumni affairs Web site.

Next meeting is Saturday, October 16, 2010 prior to the homecoming celebration.

 

Class Reunions

Class reps for 1985, 1990, 1995, 2000, and 2005, should start talking about class reunions for 2009.

The following classes have these plans thus far:

1980 – The charter class celebrates its 30th graduation anniversary. Contact Julio Ibanez or Carlos Risco for more info on a reunion.
1990 – Contact Dr. John Christoph or Dr. Frank Mills if you want to participate.
1995 – Contact Chris Sanchez or Claudia Valderamma if you want to participate.
2000 – Dr. Dena Baker plans a reunion during the FL/GA game weekend on Oct 30.
2005 – Dr. Destiny Prezzano plans a reunion during RDVM day on June 26.
